12/29/2023 0 Comments Hockney photo montageThe prints in this series reflect Hockney’s interest in optics, seeing him extend his experimentation to family, friends, landscapes, and interiors. There’s even an online app called the Hockneyizer, which will do the entire job for you, but that is about as far from the original spirit of the idea. David Hockney began experimenting with photo collages in the early ’80s. Since then the technique has been much imitated, to the point where it has almost become a bit old hat. I saw all these different spaces and I thought” ‘My god! I’ve never seen anything like this in photography.’ Then I was at the camera night and day. Hockney’s ‘Joiners’ captured the public imagination and made him a household name. It was abstracted, stylized: the ideas were based on Cubism in the way that it filters things down to an essence… It worked so well that I couldn’t believe what was happening when I looked at it. This approach rendered Hockney’s collages more akin to the way in which the eye and the brain perceive the world, closer to the “truth of the experience.” They had the added benefit of acknowledging the artist’s Cubist influences: according to Hockney, “he main point was the you read it differently. The idea of the photocollage appealed to Hockney for many reasons, among them that – by compiling photographs taken from slightly different angles at slightly different times – he could alter both the perspective and the scale of his images. He would take polaroid photos and use the images to compose his patchwork of art. What is depicted in My Mother, Bolton Abbey, Yorkshire My Mother depicts the photo-collage-portrait of Hockney’s mother seated on a grave. David Hockney was known for creating photo collages and photo montages. The style of this montage was termed Photo Joiners by Hockney. (Though he experimented with photography in the 1960s and 1970s, his first photocollage did not come to fruition until 1982.) Thereafter his photocollages, which he called “joiners”, were exhibited across the globe, from the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Tokyo. David Hockney made this photo collage titled My Mother, Bolton Abbey, Yorkshire, in November 1982. David Hockney created his first photocollage several decades after he had established himself as a leading figure in contemporary art.
